Reflections on a South African Journey

With The Aquila Collection

Chris Crampton, our MD for Europe, and Franco Sessini, our Director of Sales for UK and Ireland, look back on an unforgettable visit to South Africa, organised by The Aquila Collection – a portfolio of award-winning Big 5 lodges and Cape Town experiences. This was more than just a trip, it was a journey of discovery and connection that changed their perspective and captured their hearts.

Check out the three blogs highlighting our intrepid duo’s adventures and then read their reflections below…

A Journey Beyond Expectations

How to even begin to summarise it?  World-class wine tastings, incredible food, exhilarating quad bike rides in the wilderness, scenic scooter descents, close encounters with wildlife including the Big 5, and even wilder scenery.

The team from the Aquila Collection went above and beyond in ensuring that we experienced as much as possible from the point of view of a tourist rather than the boring travel industry professionals that we are.  Not only did they want to show off their incredible portfolio of Big 5 lodges – but were also incredibly enthusiastic to introduce us to the region and experiences around Cape Town.

The result is that we are fully sold on the destination, fully sold on the Aquila products, and have a deeper understanding of its unique place within a wider visit to the region.

Sustainability at the Heart of Aquila

Sustainability is a cornerstone of responsible travel in the 21st century, and Aquila is leading the charge. Their reserves grow as much of their own food as they possibly can, investing heavily in hydroponics to minimise water usage while maximising crop production for their restaurants. Renewable energy powers their properties, with solar and wind reducing their carbon footprint dramatically. This isn’t just eco-conscious hospitality—it’s a commitment to a better future.

In addition, Aquila is highly regarded for its efforts to restore pride within the local community and its commitment to conserving the Karoo land.

Wildlife Conservation: A Moral and Practical Imperative

Animal welfare isn’t just an ethical responsibility—it allows the properties to work with nature, to maintain the natural balance and not just be an attraction.  Aquila’s reserves reflect the proportions of wildlife found in the wild, ensuring that resources can sustain them. While the animals roam free, they are discreetly monitored by professional staff—necessary in a world where rhinos (and other animals) require human protection from human threats. Aquila’s rehabilitation centre rescues and rehabilitates orphaned or injured wildlife in conjunction with other reserves in South Africa.

We particularly enjoyed hearing about the surpise birth of two lion cubs, which had to be removed from their mother, and are now being raised in the centre before being introduced to the pride.

Is South Africa Safe for Travellers?

Safety concerns often arise when considering South Africa, but our experience was overwhelmingly positive. We had no issues and felt entirely comfortable in Cape Town.

As with any major city, common-sense precautions apply. Stick to well-lit areas—there are many nightlife areas full of bars and restaurants that are well lit. Take advantage of the incredibly affordable taxis or Uber instead of walking through quiet streets at night.

Be smart and sensible, just as you would anywhere else, and you’ll find Cape Town an inviting and vibrant place.

Just Go!

Our final piece of advice—just go!

South Africa is a magical destination that deserves a place on every traveller’s bucket list.

We embarked on this journey to experience the products of the Aquila Collection, but we came away with so much more: lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deep appreciation for the beauty and spirit of South Africa.
