Touch Down in Cape Town…

Our journey began with a flight with KLM via Amsterdam. We arrived in Cape Town refreshed, thanks to a pre-trip stay at the excellent Hotel Verde. This conveniently located hotel provided everything we needed after a long journey: comfortable rooms, a bar and good food.

A Scenic Journey…

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we met our hosts, Charalize and Johan from The Aquila Collection. Their professionalism, dedication and enthusiasm were infectious, and we knew we were in for a treat. Joining us was Wilson Tauro, the African Regional Manager for KLM/Air France, who was also keen to experience the Aquila magic.

Our drive to Aquila Private Game Reserve was nothing short of spectacular. We were captivated by the ever-changing landscapes, from rolling vineyards reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands to the rugged mountains and vast plains that hinted at the wilderness that lay ahead. As the old cliché goes, ‘it’s not just about the destination; it’s also about the journey’. Our driver, Dylan, added to the experience with his fascinating commentary and expert navigation.

Roaring Fires & Rustic Luxury…

As we approached Aquila, the anticipation was palpable. The warm welcome from the staff instantly set the tone for our stay. After a delicious lunch in the lodge’s inviting restaurant (complete with roaring fireplace – it was winter in South Africa!), we were ready to explore.

Aquila has cleverly designed their reserve to cater to everyone. At only 2 hours’ drive from Cape Town, it is popular with day visitors who have their own separate dining area to use before setting out on day safaris. This means that overnight guests can enjoy the tranquility of the reserve without feeling overcrowded.

If you are staying overnight (we strongly advise it) there are packages available in delightful rustic cottages, bungalows and in the spacious, well equipped modern main building with extraordinary views across the reserve to the mountains beyond. With a stunning outdoor pool, convivial bar and lounge, a spa that rivals those in Southeast Asia (Chris can attest to this!), and wildlife right on their doorstep, this boutique resort offers a true escape on the African plain.

 An Unconventional Safari…

Our first wildlife encounter was anything but ordinary. After a safety briefing, and equipped with scarves, gloves, hairnets and crash helmets, we hopped onto quad bikes for a thrilling ride through the wilderness. We zoomed along the dirt tracks for what seemed like miles, stopping occasionally to take in the spectacular scenery, and with the engines off, the utter silence around us. Awe inspiring doesn’t begin to explain it.  Our guide gave us lots of interesting information about the land, the geology and also the wildlife, and also explained that this excursion can be done on horseback if preferred.

We also saw the stunning pop-up tented site built under the mountains that is used for conference or incentive guests – something that those of you who work in the large group sector need to know about, as this occupies an incredible location in the wilderness.

Big Five Encounters…

After our exhilarating quad bike adventure, we ventured deeper into the reserve via a 4×4, open sided, almost armoured personnel carrier type truck, with raised sides so you can see all you need to. With the expert guidance (and keen eyes) of our professional ranger, we were lucky enough to spot the Big Five in all their glory – lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalo.

Our highlight – the lions. These are kept separately from the other animals, both because of the legal requirements in the western cape, and also more prosaically because if they weren’t, they would wipe out much of the reserve and disturb the balance of the ecosystem that has been created there.  Still, they have a huge area in which to roam, meaning that they can’t always be seen. We were fortunate to witness a young male lion getting rather cozy with a lioness (or two!). Nature at its finest!

Wine, Dine, and Connect…

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we gathered in the lodge’s cozy lounge, where we were treated to a wine tasting led by Shaun, Aquila’s passionate wine expert. Dinner in the elegant restaurant was a feast for the senses, with delicious local cuisine and lively conversation about the day’s adventures.

We wrapped up the evening with engaging discussions with Shaun, Johan and Charalize, delving into the world of South African wines and the unique aspects of the Aquila experience. It was the perfect end to a day filled with adventure and new discoveries.

A Spa Morning…

The next morning Chris headed straight for the spa for some well-deserved relaxation. The spa offers a wide array of treatments at prices that are refreshingly affordable, especially compared to those in Europe or the Americas. It’s a testament to South Africa’s reputation as a value-for-money destination. The spa’s tranquil atmosphere, complete with an inviting indoor pool adds another dimension to Aquila, proving it’s more than just a safari destination – it’s a true retreat.

Stay tuned for Blog 2, where we’ll venture to Inverdoorn Private Game Reserve and experience a different side of the South African wilderness!
